12.1 Candidates will be able to develop an online facilitation plan based on best practices of online learning and teaching that demonstrates their ability to teach in the online environment.
I am one of the instructors for the independent reading course for my district. This course is specifically marketed to secondary, content-area teachers to help them see the value of independent reading school-wide and learn how to implement an independent reading program in their setting. In the summer of 2018, I took "Transformative Online Teaching" with Dr. Keane. Because I knew I would be teaching the IR course again in the Fall, and because I thought that the IR course needed to be improved, I chose to focus my online facilitation plan on that course.
Using the guidelines of the course, including the R2D2 model, the guidelines for good discussion boards, the Community of Inquiry model, and the characteristics of Adult Learners, I completely reconfigured and rewrote the plan for the course. Then, in the Fall, I was able to actually implement those changes. I found that I had significantly more buy-in from my teacher-students and I also enjoyed teaching the course more.
